What motivated me to join FIRE-ADAPT

Above all, to learn about different operational applications in other countries.

About my secondment at PCF during the project´s gathering at the Spain Study Hub, in Catalonia

What the objective of my secondment was

See the different types of integrated fire management that are being done in Spain. Except for the pine plantations, the conditions in Italy are very similar in Spain in terms of climate and vegetation. So, it was very interesting to see different overlaps between Sardinia and Catalonia.

How it benefited PCF and me

I had the opportunity to learn about different aspects of wildfires in Spain. For example, the extreme conditions that drive them. We could contribute our expertise in, mainly, wildfire simulations and providing data about vegetation and fuel conditions.

How similar and different the realities of wildfires in Italy and Spain are

The orography in Italy and Catalonia is very complex, and the wildfires are very dangerous due to the great amount of vegetation. The tactics that can be used to fight wildfires are similar too. The use of fire is very interesting for us, and Catalonia is a leader in the matter. We are not so good at the moment, but, at the regional level, colleagues from operational institutions are trying to use fire to fight fire.

What caught my attention about Spain

The characteristics of the landscape. Many parts of the landscape in Sardinia are abandoned. In Catalonia, on the contrary, it´s clear that the hands of the human being are in the landscape (with crops, etc.).
